My day

En ole kamalasti postaillu tänne viime päivinä. Mun elämä täällä on ollu niin simppeliä - käyny urheilemessa ja käyny töissä! Välillä töitä on saanut tehdä ihan urakalla. Tässä esimerkki mun lauantaista:

8.00-11.00 aamupalatarjoilija
11.00-15.30 kerroshoitaja
18-22 illallistarjoilija

Oli siis kiireinen päivä, mutta silti mukava! Meillä oli asiakkaita ympäri maailmaa, Pinja laitteli tyhmiä kuvia Pyhäjärven vierailultaan, mun ja Simonin Italian reissu varmistui kesäksi... <3 ;) Ja päivän kruunaus oli se, kun olin illalla kävelemässä kotiin työpäivän jälkeen ja mua vastaan käveli mua olkapäähän asti pitkä ja pyöreä japanilainen nainen. Yllään sillä oli toppahaalarit, laskettelulasit ja hiihtosauvat ja siellä se kadulla hoiperteli Ajattelin, että voi ei se on eksyny (vaikka täällä ei ole kuin nuo 2 katua) mitä mä sille nyt teen. Mutta ennen kun ehdin itse avata suuta se tuli mun luokse ja alkoi puhumaan hulluna japania. Ei siis hajuakaan mitä se sano, mutta taivaalle se osotteli. Nähtävästi se siis oli ulkona katselemassa revontulia! Valitettavasti taivaalla oli pelkkiä pilviä, jotka vaan näytti punertavilta ja se luuli niitä revotuliksi :( Täällä päin on ihan normaalia nähdä joukko japanilaisia ulkona keskellä yötä ottamassa kuvia (pilvisestä) taivaasta! :D

I haven't been posting al lot last days. It is because my life has been pretty simple here - i go exercising and I go work! Here is an example of my Saturday:

So I had a busy day but it still was fun! I had customers around the world and mine and Simon's summer trip to Italy became sure ... <3 ;) And the funnies part of my day was when I was walking home from work and I saw a short and round japanese walking on the street. She was wearing quilted over-all, skiing classed and sticks. I was thinking that oh god she's lost (even we have only 2 streets) what should I do with her. But before I said anything she came to me and started to speak japan like crazy. I have no idea what she said but she was pointing on the sky. Obviously she was outside looking for northers lights! Unfortunately they were not northers lights but only a reddish clouds and she tought they were the mystical phenomenon :( Over here it is normal to see a group of japanese outside in the middle of the night taking photos of the (cloudy) sky! :D

First working week

Ensimmäinen työviikko on takana ja voin olla iloisin mielin :) Työpaikka on kiva ja tuo mulle sopivasti jotain uutta! Luulin saapuneeni sesongin huippuun ja suoraan kiireisen työarkeen, mutta täällä onkin ollu aika hiljaista ja se kiire alkaakin vasta ensi kuussa. Työtahti ei muutenkaan päätä kamalasta huimaa, sillä meidän ravintola on auki aamupalan lisäksi vain 4 tunti illassaan... Vähät tunnit kuitenkin kompensoituu sillä, ettei vapaapäiviä juurikaan ole ja me tarjoilijat hoidetaan vuorotellen öisin respavuorot ja lupauduin myös auttelemaan kerroshoitajia tarpeen tullen! On siis oikein piristävää kun saa tehdä kaikkea aamupalavuoroista, tarjoilusta ja respahommista siivoukseen.

Työviikko mulla päättyikin mukavasti synttäreihin ja sen kunniaks lähdettiinkin Äkäslompolon yöelämään ja pubikierroshan siitä tuli: Selvä Pyy, Joiku Pub, Tower ja Pirtukellari :)

My first week at work is done and it has been a nice place :) I thought that it is super busy when I arrive but it is actually quite quiet and it is gonna get busier next month. It hasn't been too busy either because the restaurant is open only for breakfast and then 4 hours in the evening. But we don't have so many free days and the waitresses also take care of the night shifts at the reception and I promised to help with house keeping too when ever needed. So it's really nice to do everything: breakfast shifts, waiting, reception and cleaning.

My first work week happened to end to my birthday so we went to pub crawling in local pubs :)

Reindeer spotting

Lapissa elää lähes 200 000 poroa ja odotin kovasti niiden näkemistä. Ensimmäisen poroni näin jo bussimatkalla Kolarista ja Äkäslompoloon ja siitä lähtien tiesin tulleeni Lappiin :) Eilisellä hiihtoretkellä törmäsin poroihin lähietäisyydeltä! Ne juoksi neljän poron laumassa lumikenkäilijöiden polkua pitkin ja hyppäsi suoraan mun ladulle ja laukkasi eteenpäin. Mä lähdin hiihtämään kamalaa vauhtia ja kaivelin samalla puhelinta, että saisin niistä hienon lähikuvan! Kuvan sain, mutta hyvä että siitä poroja erottaa :P

P.S Olen kuullut ihmisten käyttävän Lapissa hassua sanontaa "poronkusema" puhuttaessa etäisyyksistä. Tiiättekö mitä se tarkottaa? Se tarkottaa matkaa, jonka poro voi juosta kusitaukojensa välissä ja se on maksimissaan siis 7,5 km :D

I saw my first reindeer already in the bus on the way here. He was walking on the street and the driver had to slow down because of him. There are almost 200 000 reindeers in Lapland so it is normal to see them on the roads and sometimes there are so many of them that they block the road and all you can do is to wait them to move. Seeing a reindeers gives just a feeling that you're in Lapland!

Yesterday I saw reindeers again. I was nordic skiing in the forest when 4 reindeers jumped to my ski track and ran away! I started to ski faster following them and at the same time was digging my phone so that I'd get a nice photo of them from short distance. Well I got a photo but it's not from close but you can still see them :P

P.S There is a funny way to describe distance in Lapland: Something is not further than a"reindeers piss". Reindeer piss (poronkusema) means a distance a reindeer can run before he needs a pissing break. It can maximum 7,5 kilometers :D

Exciting snowboarding

Sunnuntaina lähdinkin vihdoinkin rinteille. Hehe naurattaa toi mun sananvalinta "vihdoinkin", musta vaan tuntuu että oon ollu täällä jo ties kuinka kauan. Eikä siis millään pahalla on vaan tullu puuhailtua niin paljon! Ilmaiset rinneliput on yks meidän työsuhde-eduista, i-ha-naa!

Mutta siis lähdin rinteille vaikka edellisenä päivänä oli varoiteltu myrskyvaarasta. Aamulla kun heräsin oli sää kuitenkin normaali, mitä nyt tunturin lakea ei näkynyt niinkuin ei muinakaan päivinä... Mutta tän päivän jälkeen päätin, etten enää ikinä lähde hissin kyytiin jos rinteet on noin usvan peitossa. Laskeskelin siinä muutamia alarinteita ja siinä oli vielä ihan hyvät laskukelit mutta kun lähdin hissillä kohti rinteiden huippua oli näkyvyys nolla! Matkustin siinä hississä, mun edessä ei ollut ketään, mun takana ei ollu ketään eikä mun ympärillä näkyny mitään muuta kun valkosta. Mun piti vaan tuijottaa siihen metrin päähän eteeni koska se oli ainut mitä näin! Kun pääsin huipulle päätin lopettaa touhun samantien ja laskin alas. Ja en edelleenkään nähnyt metriä edemmäs eteeni. Ja mä en tajua, että siellä silti ihmiset vaan laski menemään! Ei keli muita näköjään haitannu :D


On Sunday I finally went to snowboard. Hehe it's funny I use the word "finally", but I just feel I have been here longer than few days. And it's not a bad thing, I have just been doing a lot of things I think. Free tickets to the slopes is one of our employee benefits, I love it!

So I went to the slopes even they were warning about a coming storm the day before. But I woke up and the weather was normal. Well I couldn't see the top of the hill like i couldn't see it any other day either. But after the experience today I decoded never go to the slopes if the weather is this foggy. Snowboarding was fine on  the bottom of the hill but when I took a lift on the top of the hill I didn't see anything. I was at the lift and I there was no one in front of me, no one behind me and I around me I saw nothing but white. I just had to stare to the ground one meter ahed of me cause that was all I saw. When I I got on the top I decided  to go down down right away and stop the snowboarding And I still could see only one meter ahead of me. And I don'r understand that there still were a lot of people skiing! The weather didn't obviously bother everyone :D

Apartment

Meille kausityöläisille on täällä Lapissa järkätty asuminen. Palkasta lähtee automaattisesti tietty summa vuokran maksuun ja siihen sit sisältyy sähkö ja vesimaksut ja sen sellaset. Asuntoja on kaikenlaisia, jotkut asuu "punkkereissa" eli kellariin rakennetuissa soluasunnoissa jakaen makkarin toisen tyypin kanssa (ja nukkuu kerrossängyissä) ja keittiön ja kylppärin muun poppoon, sanotaan vaikka 6 ihmisen kanssa.

Minä itse asun rivitaloasunnossa kahden muun tytön (tai toista vois kutsua enemmän naiseksi) kanssa. Minä ja toinen tytöistä nukutaan kaksin makkarissa ja yksi olkkarissa ja jaetaan kylppäri ja keittiö. Mun ei periaatteessa tarvinnu tuoda mitään mukanani vaan pyyhkeet ja lakanat sain hotellilta ja kämppä oli varustettu kahvinkeittimellä ja muutamalla haarukalla ja lautasella. Mitään luksustahan tää ei ole, mutta menee näin väliaikasesti! Ja vaikka kuulostaa hieman ahtaalta, on meillä ikioma sauna ja mun mielestä kaikki maailman miinukset on korvattu omalla saunalla! <3

Apartments are arranged to all us employees in Lapland. They automatically take certain amount of the rent away from my salary. There are a lot different kinds of living solutions. Some people live in dorms sharing the bedroom with another person and kitchen and living room with other for example 6 persons. 

I live in a two-room apartment with 2 other girs (or the other one is more a woman). Me and the other girl sleep in the bedroom and the other one in the living room and we share the kitchen and bathroom. I didn't need to bring anything with me, I got the towels and sheets from the hotel and the apartment was equipped with coffee machine and few works and plates. This is nothing luxurious but it's ok temporarily. And even it is like this, we have own sauna in the apartment and I don't care about any minuses as long as I have own sauna! <3

Wine and food tasting

Tälle postaukselle oli kaksi otsikkovaihtoehtoa: ensimmäinen työpäivä tai viini ja ruoka maistijaiset. Mun ensimmäinen työpäivä nimittäin koitti mutta me vaan maisteltiin ruokia ja juomia mitä meidän ruokalistalle tulee täksi sesongiksi! Ruuat oli tosi hyviä ja tosi lappihenkisiä: lohisalaattia, lohikeittoa ja tattariblinejä alkuruuaksi. Pääruokana poronkäristystä, lapinpataa, muikkuja, kanaa ja lohta. Jälkiruoakan lakkalettuja ja leipäjuustoa. Ruokien maistelun jälkeen siirryttiin viineihin ja mullahan ei ole mikään hyvä viinapää ja mulla oikeesta tuntu päässä kahdeksan maistijaisen jälkeen :D Muuten työpaikka näytti viihtyisältä ja odotan innolla, että työt vihdoin alkaa tiistaina.

Illalla jatkoin sitten tyttöjen kanssa oluelle aulabaariin ja siitä mentiin Pubiin Selvä Pyyhyn, josta mut ylipuhuttiin yökerhoon Toweriin, josta vielä kotimatkalla käytiin hotellin kellaribaarissa. Eli tuli nähtyä tämän kylän tärkeimmät baaritkin :)

I had two options for this headline: First work day or Wine and food tasting. Because I had my first work day but it was only tasting the menu we have for this season! The dishes were delicious and really something you get from Lapland: salmon soup, salmon salad, reindeer, Lapland pot, cloudberry pancakes and bread cheese. After tasting the dishes we were tasting the wines and my tolerance for alcohol is not really good and I felt the wine in my head after the 8th tasting :D 

In the evening I went to have beer with the girls at the lobby bar, then we continued to one pub, then I got talked into a night club and on the way home we went to see cellar bar at the hotel. So I got to know pubs from the village too :)

Nordic Skiing

Päivä numero 2 ja halusin heti lähteä luontoon ja testaamaan hiihtolatuja! En siis ole tehnyt kunnon hiihtolenkkiä sitten......lukion, mutta mun oli pakko saada itselleni sukset kun olin sentään Lappiin tulossa hihitolatujen keskellä! (Ylläksellä on 330km hiihtolatuja) Olen vielä niin onnekas että heti meidän talon vierestä alkaa hiihtoladut. Sit vielä kämppikset neuvoi mut sopivalle aloittelijan reitille, joten päivällä iskin sukset jalkaan ja läksin metsään! Hiihdin niin pitkään, että saavuin söpöön latukahvilaan, kävin siellä munkilla ja lähdin takasin päin. Reissu oli ihana!

Iltapäivällä menin vielä katsastamaan miltä Yllästunturi näyttää. Tästä "kylältä" rinteille on matkaa kolmisen kilometria, joten hotellin edestä kulkee Skibussi suurinpiirtein tunnin välein. Vinkiksi, jos halajaa Ski -bussin kyytiin, kannattaa seisoa siinä hotellin ulkona odottamassa bussia eikä sisällä aulabaarissa, koska se bussi pyyhältää ohi pysähtymättä hotellin kohdalla. Mutta jos niin käy, voi kuitenkin käydä hyvä tuuri ja hotellin työntekijä on juuri lähdössä kotiin ja voi heittää sut rinteille :)

The day number 2. I wanted right away to go to see the nature and to test the skis! I haven't done honest nordic skiing since.... high school but I wanted to buy new skis since I was coming to Lapland with many of possibilities for nordic skiing! And I was so lucky that I can start skiing right next to my house. My roommates told me a nice road to take so I put the skis on and went to the forest. I was sking as long as I ended up to a little forest house with a cafeteria. I stopped there, ate a donut and started skiing back. Such a lovely trip!

In the afernoon I went to see how the hill looks like. There is about 3 kilometers from the villages to the hill so I took a Ski-bus to get there. Or trying to take it. I was waiting inside at the lobby bar for the bus and when it arrived it didn't stop but continued the way without picking me up! But I was lucky and the worker of the hotel was just leaving and gave me a ride :)
